Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has assured Ghanaians of his unwavering commitment to signing the anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law if he becomes president in the upcoming elections.
The proposed legislation, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities, is currently awaiting the approval of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. However, its enactment is on hold due to ongoing legal challenges questioning its constitutionality. The Supreme Court is scheduled to deliver a judgment on the matter on December 18.
Addressing a congregation at the Philadelphia Church in Kumasi during a worship service, Dr. Bawumia expressed his firm resolve to act decisively on the matter once all legal hurdles are cleared.
“There are many policies or works that are not completed yet. And I know that when I come into power, I will do these works to make sure that everyone is happy,” he stated.
He emphasized the significance of certain pending policies in Parliament, noting their importance to Ghanaians. “There are some policies pending in Parliament which I know are very important to our father. One is the bill for the LGBTQ. When I come to power, I will sign it without hesitation, and the second thing is the Anti-witchcraft bill,” Dr. Bawumia added.
His remarks underline his commitment to addressing these controversial issues as part of his broader vision for governance.
