Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is the preferred choice of running mate for NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
This is the result of a recent National Investigation Bureau (NIB) survey. The survey included responses from 5,116 NPP delegates nationwide, comprising national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives.
According to the survey results, over 76% of respondents preferred the Manhyia South MP, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, over all other candidates. Trailing him was the Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who received 10.16% of the votes.
Other notable figures considered for the role included Apostle Opoku Onyinah, former Chairman of the Pentecost Church-Ghana, and Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture and MP for Abetifi Constituency.
As the 2024 general election approaches, with just six months remaining, Dr Bawumia faces a significant decision in selecting his running mate from within the party’s high-ranking members. The survey also strongly agreed that the running mate should hail from the Ashanti Region. Approximately 84% of respondents believed that Dr Opoku Prempeh was the ideal candidate for the position, citing his charisma and popularity among party members.
However, the NIB report advises caution. It warns that Dr Prempeh’s current position as the Minister of Energy could pose challenges due to the ongoing power crises in Ghana. The report suggests that the government may need to implement necessary measures to bolster its performance in the energy sector to improve the party’s prospects in the upcoming elections.
