BoG clarifies handling uncirculated Banknotes for Liberia

The BoG assured that these banknotes will be re-exported to Liberia once logistical arrangements are finalised.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has clarified allegations made by MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa regarding the handling of uncirculated banknotes for the Central Bank of Liberia.

In a statement dated August 28, 2024, the BoG clarified that the uncirculated banknotes are part of a long-standing currency transfer arrangement between the two central banks, established in 2004.

The BoG assured that these banknotes will be re-exported to Liberia once logistical arrangements are finalised.

The Central Bank of Liberia also confirmed the legitimacy of the arrangement, emphasising that the shipments are cleared through customs in both countries.

The BoG criticised Mr Ablakwa’s attempts to misinform the public by circulating sensitive documents related to this agreement.
