Chaos at Ablekuma West collation centre as residents clash with security and EC

Tensions flared as some persons attempted to force their way into the premises to observe the collation, leading to a standoff with security and Electoral Commission officials.

Pandemonium erupted at the Ablekuma West collation centre in the Greater Accra region shortly after polls closed in Ghana’s general elections on Saturday, December 7.

Tensions flared as some persons attempted to force their way into the premises to observe the collation, leading to a standoff with security and Electoral Commission officials.

Officers were seen pushing against the gate to prevent the crowd from entering the centre, while agitated residents threw missiles over the barricade.

Some of the ballot boxes had to be thrown over the gate amid the chaos with two more boxes seemingly being transported in a similar fashion.

The situation created chaos around the collation centre, disrupting the otherwise orderly close of voting in the constituency.

Authorities are working to de-escalate the tensions and restore calm as the collation of results continues.

Speaking on JoyNews, security analyst Prof Kwesi Aning called for cooperation and more security deployment to ensure a smooth conclusion to the electoral process.
