Traditional leaders, youths and residents of Mafi Dove and its environs in the Central Tongu District and Battor, Aveyime and Mepe in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region have threatened to stage a massive demonstration to register their displeasure at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government over the deplorable state of the roads in the areas.
Residents cited the include the fixing f the Battor-Aveyime road linking Afelekpo-Agbekporkope-Atitekpo to Mafi Dove in the Central Tongu district as well as Sege to Battor-Aveyime-Mepe road.
The chiefs including drivers and commuters described these roads as complete ‘death traps,’ that need urgent fixing.
“There are deathtraps because you cannot call these potholes,” some said.
Although governments have over the years promised to reconstruct the road, this is yet to happen with further deterioration posing a serious threat to motorists.
The road linking the Sege to Mepe and Battor Aveyime road linking the Afelekpo-Agbekporkope -Atitekpo to Sogakope-Dove junction are now riddled with gaping potholes and drivers are fed up and these roads are getting more dangerous by the day.
The Aveyime Battor and Asutuare town roads are also death traps and these roads are not motorable for the residents, especially those from the river banks.
“One of the main roads in the North Tongu district, the Aveyime Bator town road, which connects to Aveyime and other municipalities in the district, is in a very dire state after contractors left the site when the general election was over,’ they complained.
In an interview with Soireenews.com, the traditional officer holders, drivers and commuters expressed their disappointment about the current nature of these roads.
“These roads are very bad and we are suffering on these roads because they [authorities] are not maintaining them,” they complained.
On the road from Mepe through Mafi Devime to Mafi-Dove-Sogakope junction, the residents do not understand why the road constructed few years ago will deteriorate.
According to the residents, the deplorable roads are posing great danger to lives of the residents living in these farming and fishing areas.
In an interview with Soireenews.com, some of the residents accused the contractors-First sky company and KADACON Company-for doing a shoddy work on the road.
They complained bitterly that the roads there have badly deteriorated.
A resident Tsatsu Fiasi who spoke with Soireenews.com on behalf of the people living in these communities narrated that, several appeals to the government through the Central Tongu District Assembly to work on the roads within the Mafi- Dove and Devime townships proved futile.
According to him, the attention of the government was also drawn to the poorly built culverts and bridges which could easily be washed away by a heavy rainstorm but nothing has been done about it.
The resident reiterated that they have complained severally about the nature of the road at the time of construction but nothing was done about it.
According to him, the deplorable state of the road is damaging their cars, adding that the government should look for competent contractors to reconstruct the roads.
The Sogakope-Mafi Dove main junction feeder road connects to the Devime, Mepe-Degorme-Battor and Sege-Accra Highway was the World Bank loan facility project with the support of government of Ghana.
The resident blamed the deterioration of the road on the nature of the project.
He explained that the Mafi portion of the road was under a feeder road construction design which natural gravels were used instead of rocks.
He also blamed the deterioration of the road on heavy duty vehicles belonging to sand winning companies plying the road.
