The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has assured that the Constitution Review Consultative Committee will proceed with its work unimpeded by the upcoming December 7 elections.
This Committee, established by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, is charged with gathering public input to inform potential amendments to the 1992 Constitution.
Amidst concerns over the timing of the Committee’s activities, particularly with just three months left before a crucial electoral event, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu asserted that the electoral process will not disrupt their mandate.
“I have heard people opine that in an election year, there is not much that can be done when it comes to constitutional amendment. With the greatest respect, I beg to differ,” he emphasised.
The Minister highlighted historical examples, pointing out that all amendments to the 1992 Republican Constitution were made in 1996, following the elections in November and December of that year.
“So I believe that we will not be stopped by time to do the consultation we intend to continue,” Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu affirmed.
