COP George Alex Mensah is warming up to Contest Bekwai Parliamentary Seat for NPP – Brogya Genfi

The controversy surrounding COP Mensah’s alleged involvement in a leaked audio recording, in which a police commissioner and a politician discuss a plot to remove IGP George Dampare from office, erupted on July 11.

In a recent revelation, Ernest Yaw Brogya Genfi, Deputy Director for Special Duties of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has alleged that a prominent police officer, COP George Alex Mensah, is gearing up to launch his political career under the banner of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Brogya Genfi’s claims come in the midst of parliamentary scrutiny facing COP Mensah, who is alleged to be involved in a leaked tape discussing plans to oust Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akufo-Dampare.

Genfi suggests that this move into politics may not be in the best interests of the country. Speaking during a panel discussion on UTV’s Adekye Nsroma on September 14, 2023, Genfi argued that COP Mensah, with the current Member of Parliament for Bekwai constituency, Joseph Osei Owusu (known as Joe Wise), announcing his decision not to seek re-election in 2024, is positioning himself for a run for the Bekwai seat.

“COP Alex Mensah, because he wants to contest in the name of the NPP in the Bekwai constituency, has already stated in parliament that he is an NPP sympathizer. I am also aware, as a matter of fact, that he is going to contest in the name of the NPP for Bekwai because Joe Wise has said that he won’t run again, and he is the one behind him going to contest,” Genfi stated.

He voiced his concern that COP Mensah’s political affiliations and ambitions might influence his decisions in favor of the NPP, potentially resulting in actions that could be detrimental to the country’s interests.

Background:

The controversy surrounding COP Mensah’s alleged involvement in a leaked audio recording, in which a police commissioner and a politician discuss a plot to remove IGP George Dampare from office, erupted on July 11.

In response, the Minority Caucus in Parliament called for an investigation into the contents of the audio. Subsequently, on July 25, 2023, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, appointed a seven-person bipartisan committee to investigate the audio. This committee comprises three members from both the Majority and Minority sides of Parliament, along with a technical expert.
