CPP Issues Ultimatum to NPP Running Mate Over Nkrumah Comparison

The CPP demands an immediate retraction and an apology for the sake of the country’s image,” the statement read. “Failure to do so will prompt us to appeal to President Akufo-Addo to relieve Dr Opoku Prempeh of his duties as Minister of Energy.”

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, demanding he withdraw comments comparing President Akufo-Addo’s legacy unfavourably with that of Kwame Nkrumah.

At his unveiling in Kumasi on July 9, Dr Opoku Prempeh asserted that President Akufo-Addo surpassed Nkrumah’s achievements. This sparked vehement disagreement from the CPP, which described the comments as “reprehensible and unbecoming.”

In a statement dated July 10, the CPP urged Dr Opoku Prempeh to apologize and retract his statement promptly, threatening further action if he fails to comply. They called for his resignation from all governmental and political roles should he not apologize within the stipulated timeframe.

“The CPP demands an immediate retraction and an apology for the sake of the country’s image,” the statement read. “Failure to do so will prompt us to appeal to President Akufo-Addo to relieve Dr Opoku Prempeh of his duties as Minister of Energy.”

The CPP also called Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to withdraw Dr Opoku Prempeh as his vice-presidential candidate, emphasizing the need to uphold Ghana’s political and economic stability.

Furthermore, the CPP demanded that Dr Opoku Prempeh’s statement be removed from all media platforms, condemning the comparison as “dead on arrival” and unfit for publication.
For further updates, the CPP stated they would monitor the situation closely as they await Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s response to their request.
