The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has confirmed that President John Dramani Mahama’s official Twitter (X) account was hacked and used to promote a suspicious cryptocurrency called “Solana Africa.”
In a statement released on March 18, 2025, the CSA reported that the breach occurred in the early hours of March 17. The hackers used the president’s account to push Solana Africa, raising concerns about the platform’s security and the broader implications for political figures’ online safety.
The CSA assured the public that it is working closely with X (formerly Twitter) and other stakeholders to address the incident and prevent future occurrences.
A coordinated crypto scam?
The attack mirrors a growing pattern of high-profile account breaches used to legitimise cryptocurrency scams.
The sharp rise and fall of Solana Africa’s market value following the endorsement from Mahama’s account suggests that the incident may have been a coordinated rug pull.
Data from trading platforms show that Solana Africa peaked at a market cap of around $2.4 million before crashing to approximately $7,000 after liquidity was drained.
3News data analysis suggest that the attackers may have pulled up to $1.9 million before dumping the tokens and crashing the market.
The CSA’s confirmation underscores the urgent need for improved social media security for public figures and greater vigilance from both the public and security agencies.
The Authority stated that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
