The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has launched a GHS100,000 emergency rent fund to help victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage secure accommodation as they continue to suffer from the disaster’s impact.
The spillage, which occurred in October 2023, displaced thousands of residents, who are still grappling with its aftermath.
Announcing the fund after filing his nomination for the upcoming December, 7 elections, Mr. Ablakwa emphasised his commitment to ensuring comprehensive resettlement and compensation for over 12,000 victims of the dam spillage.
“For my next term, my priority will be the total resettlement and total compensation of all victims of the VRA spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams,” he stated.
He continued that: “As we speak, 1,360 of our fellow constituents, my beloved constituents, remain in tents, and that is unacceptable. That is inhumane.”
Mr. Ablakwa explained: “That cannot be allowed. And so in my next term, I am going to dedicate all efforts towards the full and total comprehensive resettlement and compensation of all victims, the over 12,000 victims of the VRA spillage.”
To provide immediate relief, Mr. Ablakwa announced his personal contribution: “I am putting aside GHS100,000 as emergency rent support for our brothers and sisters who are still in the tents. But we are prioritising the women, particularly nursing mothers.”
