In a bold move, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has issued a public challenge to former President and current National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, to engage in a live presidential debate.
Addressing a massive crowd of supporters in Bunkpurugu, North East Region, Dr. Bawumia expressed his eagerness to debate Mahama on their respective visions and policies for Ghana.
“I am looking forward to a debate with John Mahama on the economy, on the country, on governance,” Dr. Bawumia declared.
He, however, voiced skepticism about the likelihood of the debate happening, accusing Mahama of avoiding the confrontation. “But I am afraid that he is running away from a debate. His people say he doesn’t want to debate. I have never heard of an opposition leader who doesn’t want to debate. But he knows I will expose the emptiness of his policies.”
Dr. Bawumia specifically criticized Mahama’s proposed “24-hour economy,” questioning its feasibility and accusing the NDC of failing to provide clear explanations for their plans. “He says he has a 24-hour economy which he cannot explain. It is as empty as an empty barrel. He cannot explain it and none of his people can explain it. They say they will be exporting lions and elephants.”
Emphasizing the importance of transparency and public discourse, Dr. Bawumia stressed that a live debate would allow Ghanaians to assess the merit of each candidate’s policies directly. “When we meet mano a mano, we can debate, and the country will see where our policies lie. That is where we should go. We should give the country an opportunity to listen to us. If he chooses not to debate, I’ll continue to sell my policies.”
The challenge has sparked significant interest among the public, with many eagerly anticipating Mahama’s response.
