Ghana’s mining sector remains a key pillar of the country’s economy, serving as the leading foreign exchange earner. However, the rise in illegal small-scale mining has had devastating environmental effects, negatively impacting communities, especially those in mining areas.
To address these challenges, the Minerals Development Fund Act, 2016 (Act 912), was enacted on March 29, 2016. The law aims to ensure genuine improvements in the standard of living within mining communities affected by extractive activities.
