Dr. Tony Aubynn denies galamsey allegations, vows legal action against accusers

I’ll never support illegal mining. I’ve spent my life working to regularize mining.”

Dr. Tony Aubynn, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Minerals Commission, has firmly denied allegations of supporting illegal mining, also known as galamsey, following a controversial video that has sparked public criticism.

During an appearance on Channel One TV’s *The Big Issue*, Dr. Aubynn explained that the video, which dates back to 2020, was taken out of context, and his presence in it was misinterpreted. He also announced plans to take legal action against those spreading the false claims.

“I have never, ever… I have never and ever spoken [in support of illegal mining],” Dr. Aubynn clarified. “That video has been misinterpreted. What did I do to aid and abet there? I said something later [in the video] that the detractors don’t want to show. I’ll never support illegal mining. I’ve spent my life working to regularize mining.”

The video in question shows Dr. Aubynn in the company of some individuals alleged to be involved in galamsey, leading to accusations that he condoned their activities. However, Dr. Aubynn maintained that he was simply present at the scene and did not endorse or encourage illegal mining.

“They should show the video with people going around. I’m going to sue somebody for this because, really, I never said anything. I never opened my mouth—I was just standing there,” he added.

Dr. Aubynn also noted that this controversy arose after his 2020 visit to only two locations, despite claims he had gone to Prestea to engage with illegal miners there. “I never went to Prestea, but they said I went to Prestea for Prestea to lose,” he clarified, referring to the political accusations he faces, particularly from NPP members.
