EC intentionally released error-ridden voter register to test waters – Election Watch Ghana alleges

Dr Bossman Asare addressed journalists on Monday, September 2, admitting that some anomalies were detected with the provisional register used for the one-week exhibition exercise.

Pressure group Election Watch Ghana has responded to a recent press conference by the Deputy Chair of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Eric Bossman Asare, on the voter register.

Dr Bossman Asare addressed journalists on Monday, September 2, admitting that some anomalies were detected with the provisional register used for the one-week exhibition exercise.

He assured all stakeholders that the exhibition exercise was to rectify any anomalies with the register and a “robust” and “credible” one will, therefore, be produced for the December 7 elections.

But in a statement issued a day after the press conference, Election Watch Ghana says the EC is making deliberate attempts to rig the elections.

“We are appalled by the EC’s egregious, undemocratic decision to release a compromised, error-ridden voter register, despite possessing an authentic, error-free version,” the statement jointly signed by convenors Mark Ewusi Arkoh and Jude Balma said.

“This deliberate attempt to test the waters and gauge the reaction of Ghanaians is a cynical ploy to undermine the electoral process.”

The group, therefore, condemned the Commission’s “brazen, unconstitutional scheme to manipulate the electoral process and subvert the democratic rights of the Ghanaian people”.

“We will forever reject any register that is not fit for purpose and will do everything within our power to ensure that the integrity of the electoral process is upheld.”

It sent signals to the EC that the peace of the country rests in its bosom and, therefore, has to do all it takes to sustain it.

“We implore the EC to put aside their selfish, partisan interests and prioritize the peace and stability of Ghana.”

Election Watch Ghana finally reiterated its demands for an “authentic” and “error-free” register.
