Election 2020: Be circumspect in Your reportage- EC to Media

The Electoral Commission has cautioned the  media to be circumspect in their reportage in order not to jeopardise or compromise the integrity of the Commission and the electoral process before and after the 2020 general elections.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, EC reiterated that it’ll not compromise its stance on matters that are not in the interest of the nation and in clear contravention of the principles of electoral justice to the detriment of the electoral process and democracy.

This is in reaction to media reports on Friday, 10th January, 2020, captioned, ‘The public can’t dictate to us, we’ll work our plan for a credible poll, and attributed to the EC.

The Election Management Body(EMB), in its statement has disputed the headline insisting this is a wrong caption that seeks to create the impression that the Commission does not seek other views or opinions when taking critical decisions.

According to the EC, despite the guarantee of its independence as enshrined in Article 46 of the 1992 Constitution, it does have consultations with stakeholders which include political parties, civil society organisations, media, and many more in its quest to bring democracy to the doorstep of all Ghanaians.

“The visit by the Electoral Commission to various stakeholders last year is a clear indication of an institution that embraces divergent views and opinions,” the statement signed by its Public Affairs Director, Sylvia Annor said.
