The Ghana Police Service has pledged its full support to ensure the safety of media personnel during the 2024 General Elections. This commitment was emphasized during a stakeholder engagement held at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. The meeting brought together the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, senior journalists, and news editors to discuss measures to safeguard the media.
In his remarks, IGP Dr. Dampare described the media as a critical partner in the electoral process, noting its role as the fourth estate. “The media is a key stakeholder in this year’s elections and, as such, requires the protection and support of the Police to effectively fulfil its responsibilities,” he stated. He also underscored Ghana’s status as a beacon of democracy in Africa, attributing this achievement to effective collaboration between institutions like the Police and the media.
To enhance media safety, the Police announced the deployment of liaison officers to all media houses nationwide. These officers will serve as direct points of contact between the Police and media organizations to address security concerns and ensure the safety of journalists during election coverage.
Dr. Dampare also revealed plans to establish a toll-free contact line in partnership with telecommunications companies. This line will allow the public to share information with the Police during the election period. He urged collective efforts to make the 2024 elections a landmark event characterized by peace, security, and order.
Acknowledging the media’s influential role in shaping public discourse, the IGP called on journalists to uphold the highest standards of accuracy and professionalism. “I encourage journalists to avoid misinformation and disinformation that could undermine national stability,” he said.
Expressing confidence in the measures implemented, Dr. Dampare assured the media of their safety regardless of location. He emphasized that these efforts are designed to enable journalists to carry out their duties without fear. He further encouraged all stakeholders to work together to showcase Ghana as a model of democracy and stability during the elections.
