The National Peace Council (NPC) has expressed deep concern over reports of violence during today’s election, particularly the tragic shooting incident at Nyankpala in the Northern Region.
At a media briefing, the Council revealed that four individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, which left one person dead and several others injured.
“We are saddened by the loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected and the Nyankpala community.
“This incident is unacceptable, and we strongly condemn any act of violence tied to the electoral process,” the Chairman of the Governing board of the Council, Rev Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, stated.
He used the opportunity to remind political parties of the peace pact their leaders signed before the elections, committing to maintain peace before, during, and after the polls.
“We plead with all political parties to honour the pledges made by their presidential candidates to ensure peace in our nation. Elections should not result in bloodshed or violence,” he stated.
Rev Adu-Gyamfi reiterated the assurance from military authorities that no personnel would be stationed at polling stations, as election security is the mandate of the Ghana Police Service.
He urged all security personnel to adhere to this pledge and maintain professionalism to prevent further violence.
He also called upon the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure that the ongoing vote counting and collation is conducted credibly, transparently, and in full compliance with the law.
Rev Adu-Gyamfi appealed to Ghanaians to remain calm and refrain from any acts of violence during the counting process.
