The Planning Manager for the National Roads Safety Authority, Accra branch, Felix Owusu, has highlighted how to minimize road accidents and the importance of signboards in the country.
According to him, road safety is a government initiative aimed at reducing road accidents, including crashes, injuries, and fatalities on Ghana’s roads. He stated that the road safety authority is there to eliminate threats on Ghana’s roads; however, accidents do not occur in Ghana.
He made these remarks during a joint exercise with Gh-Signboards, where they embarked on an important mission to fix road signs from Baa-yard to Pokuase on Thursday, March 6, 2025. He noted that road signs play a crucial role in the country; however, police officers are not always present to direct traffic.
“Today, we’re joined with colleagues from Gh-Signboards to embark on this important exercise. I will always say that when it comes to the use of the road, road signs and markings play a major role because on the road, it is not everywhere you’ll find a police officer or even a traffic warden to tell you what to do and what not to do… so it’s these road signs that communicate to us while we’re on the road,” he stated.
Mr. Owusu expressed that they have observed over the years that road signs are often repositioned due to people in the country restructuring their shops on the roadside.
According to him, restructuring the position of signboards poses a safety threat to drivers and users, as they may not see the road signs.
He urged that this exercise will help educate citizens who have tampered with any road signs to rectify the issue. He added that the law is against citizens who engage in such activities.
He said, “If you live in an area or even if you have tampered with any of the road signs, please rectify it before the team even gets there, and it is against the law to engage in such activities.”
Mr. Owusu concluded that the National Road Safety Authority will continue to help remove threats from the roads to ensure road safety in the country.
