Elections 2008: High number of Flagbearer Aspirants caused Our Defeat – NPP Chairman

He said, even though it was an internal elections, supporters of the candidates had serious differences among themselves and this played a major role in the final outcome

The Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Abuakwa South in the Eastern Region, Yaw Boakye Yiadom, has stated that, the party lost the presidential elections to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2008 due to the high number of presidential aspirants who contested the Flagbearership position.

He said, even though it was an internal elections, supporters of the candidates had serious differences among themselves and this played a major role in the final outcome of the general elections.

He added that the only way to break the 8 year jinx now is for the supporters of the various aspirants to forget about their differences and come together as one family so as to help achieve the goal.

He said this in an interview with Kingdom FM’s Kontihene Kofi Oboh during the constituency’s 2021 Annual Delegates Conference at the Kyebi Presbyterian College of Education. It was on with the theme: “Breaking the 8 is a Must to Our Collective Responsibility in the Party to win elections 2024″.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Abuakwa South, Kojo Ofori-Sarfo, remarked that “Ghanaians need us to continue our good works because it is only the NPP in power that can transform the country”.

He said, in the 2016 elections they defeated the NDC with over one million votes and the expectation was that they would double that to about two million votes in the 2020 elections, however, they failed irrespective of the good job they did as a party and government.

“Our votes declined drastically to over 500,000 in election 2020 and that doesn’t mean we didn’t perform well, but it is because of disunity, backbiting, gossiping, amongst us,” he noted.

Ofori-Sarfo emphasized that with unity, peace, togetherness, love and understanding they can break the 8 years jinx in a very simple way.
