Exposing the Dubious 2.2 Million Jobs claim by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (Part 2)

An analysis of figures contained in this government’s own budget statements completely belies Bawumia’s claim:

Folks, in my earlier write-up, I exposed the ridiculous contradictions in the figures put out by Vice President, Alhaji Bawumia and the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah relative to jobs they claim to have been created by the Akufo-Addo/NPP government.

As promised at the tail end of the said write-up (Part 1) on this subject, I am now going to zoom into the specific sectoral figures that Bawumia put out on his Twitter handle to demonstrate to you, that our Vice President is simply a chronic liar.

Let’s start with the Education Ministry:

1. At No.17 of Bawumia’s data sheet on jobs created by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government (see attached sheets), the Vice President makes the claim that this government has created a total of 136,053 jobs in the Education Ministry under the following sub-agencies; National Teaching Council, Student Loan Trust Fund, Ghana Education Service, Ghana Library Authority.

2. However, an analysis of figures contained in this government’s own budget statements completely belies Bawumia’s claim:

*According to Appendix 7 of the 2017 budget statement presented to Parliament by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, for and on behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana, the Ministry of Education made up of all the agencies under it, had a total staff strength of 355,641 as at 2017 when this government took office. See the attached sheets for proof.

*Also, according to Appendix 7 of the 2023 budget statement presented to Parliament by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, for and on behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana, the Ministry of Education made up of all the agencies under it, had a total staff strength of 387,074 as at this year, 2023. See the attached sheets for proof.

*When you deduct the 2017 staff strength figure from 2023 figure, you get 31,433. What this means is that, according to data contained in government’s own budget statements, there has been only 31,433 additional staffs under the Education Ministry and NOT 136,053 as claimed by the Vice President.

3. It is worthy of note, that all the agencies listed by Bawumia as the source of the said 136,053 jobs are Public Sector entities funded by the government of Ghana. Employees of the agencies Bawumia listed: National Teaching Council, the Student Loan Trust Fund, the Ghana Education Service, the Ghana Library Authority, are all paid by the Finance Ministry through the Controller and Accountant General.

*Can our gullible NPP supporters who still believe Bawumia’s dubious 2.2 million jobs claim dispute this fact? If Yes, let them tell us which of the agencies Bawumia listed under the Education Ministry, is a non- subvented agency who pays their own employees, for which reason the Finance Minister did not capture their employees under Appendix 7 of the various budgets I have cited.

Stay tuned for Part 3.
