The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has mounted an advocacy for suitable environments in workplaces and various communities to support and enhance breastfeeding by lactating mothers.
As part of the 2024 World Breastfeeding Week commemoration, the Authority recommends a review of workplace policies to support the drive.
Its recommendation is for satisfactory maternity leave, flexible work hours, and safe, private spaces for mothers to breastfeed or express and store milk at required temperatures.
“Employers play a crucial part in supporting breastfeeding mothers.”
Additionally, the FDA called for community support to create the needed atmosphere to enhance breastfeeding.
“Community support is imperative in advancing and supporting breastfeeding practices. We call on leaders in the community, families, and local organizations to create environments that are supportive of breastfeeding and dispel the myths and stigma associated with it. Breastfeeding mothers should be able to breastfeed anywhere without being marginalized.”
Meanwhile, it urged the health sector to provide comprehensive breastfeeding education and support to strengthen the country’s healthcare systems.
“This incorporates training and equipping healthcare professionals to offer skilled breastfeeding coaching and creating baby-friendly health facilities that encourage, support and advocate for early initiation of breastfeeding at birth.”
The Authority also called for enhanced public awareness campaigns, strategy and support and investment in research and data collection on breastfeeding.
In spite of its numerous benefits, it has been found that breastfeeding practices are faced with significant challenges and disparities, particularly in marginalized and underserved communities.
Breastfeeding mothers in diverse spheres of life encounter social, psychological and knowledge challenges.
