First phase of Bui 250MW hydro solar commissioned

The first phase of 26 Mega Watts out of 50 of the Bui Power Authority (BPA) 250-megawatt hydro-solar hybrid project has been commissioned in the Banda district of the Bono region.

The project, estimated to cost 47 million dollars will provide electricity to about 59, 230 households and also contribute to ensuring the availability of stable and cost-effective power.

When completed, the Bui Hydro- Solar Hybrid Project will create employment opportunities for about 20 semi-skilled and 312 low-skilled workers.

The project commenced in October 2019 and was scheduled to be completed in the last quarter of 2020.

The 47-million-dollar project will provide electricity to about 59, 230 households and additionally create 350 direct employment. The project when completed will augment the preservation of the Bui reservoir by creating a hydro-solar PV hybrid system.

The project is a collaborative effort between Meinergy of China and BPA under BOOT financing terms with option of refinancing.  The Project has solar panels mounted on both land and the Bui Dam reservoir.  The Inauguration had the locals of Bui and surrounding communities in attendance in their numbers.

Addressing the gathering,  The Deputy Minister for Energy, William Owireku Aidoo lauded the BPA for such an innovative project. The Senior Minister, Yaw Osarfo Marfo delivering a speech for President Akufo-Addo said, the government is on course to achieve its target of increasing renewable energy component of the energy mix to 10 percent by 2030.

He said, Parliament has passed the Bui Power Authority Act, which will facilitate the BPA’s renewable energy generation drive.

The Board Chairman of Bui Power Authority, Ambassador Asare Donkor for his part, said, arrangements towards expansion of the Bui Generating Station is next after the inauguration.

He said, under the current Board, the BPA generated 1034 GW for the national grid last year and this year, about 1,114 GW of electricity has been generated for the national grid.
