A pro-government advocacy group, Fixing the Country Movement, has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to initiate a public inquiry into the Airbus corruption scandal. The group, led by its Convener, Ernest Kofi Owusu-Bempah Bonsu, expressed dissatisfaction with the recent report from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which cleared former President John Dramani Mahama, despite identifying him as “Government Official One” in the scandal.
The petition was also forwarded to the UK High Commission and the American Embassy in Accra. In it, the group questioned the OSP’s decision, stating, “Respectfully sir, in light of the above, we find it ironic and unacceptable for the OSP to conclude that Mahama didn’t benefit from the Airbus bribery scheme.” They further argued that if the US and UK authorities found Mahama culpable, the OSP should not have exonerated him.
The petition urged President Akufo-Addo to use his authority under Article 279 of the 1992 Constitution to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation is conducted. “This is a crucial case which tests the willingness and ability of the OSP to investigate and prosecute serious alleged criminality,” the petition stated, adding that “the OSP has not been able to do so.”
The group emphasized the importance of resolving this matter to allow Ghanaians to move forward, expressing confidence that the President would take prompt action.
