The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called for an independent investigation into the Food and Drugs Authority’s (FDA) decision to approve the extension of the shelf life for 22,000 bags of rice distributed to secondary schools.

Although the FDA insists that the approval process followed regulatory standards and best practices, Ablakwa has raised concerns about the potential impact on the students who consumed the rice. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the matter.

In an interview with Citi News, Ablakwa stressed the importance of an impartial inquiry, suggesting both local and international audits of the FDA’s conduct.

“They [FDA] have only conducted themselves in a manner that raises more questions. And that is why an independent inquiry into this matter is crucial,” he stated.

He also acknowledged the FDA’s willingness to face scrutiny, adding, “Perhaps, the only good thing about that press conference is that they are willing to subject themselves and their conduct in this whole scandal to investigation.”

Ablakwa criticized the lack of decisive action from the presidency, remarking, “It is really a shame that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is a leader who checked out long ago and so is taking no action.”

The call for an independent probe has intensified public discourse, with stakeholders demanding clarity on the FDA’s role and the safety of the rice provided to students.
