From Security Guard to BECE Graduate at 44: Joshua Lamptey’s Journey of Determination

I Got My BECE at Age 44 Due to Lack of Parental Sponsorship

Education is key to the development and well-being of every nation. There is a saying: “When you educate a man, you educate an individual; but when you educate a woman, you educate a family.” Yet, this inspiring story proves that anyone, regardless of age, can make significant strides when determined to pursue education.

Joshua Lamptey, a 44-year-old man living in Jamestown, Accra, has defied the odds to earn his Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Married with three children and working as a security officer at Sacred Heart Technical Institute in Accra, Joshua’s story is one of resilience and determination.

A Childhood Dream Deferred

Joshua, the son of Mr. Alfred Lamptey, a driver, and Naomi, a trader, shared his story with GhanaNewsOnline‘s Madjid Diallo in hopes of inspiring others and seeking sponsorship to fulfill his dream of becoming a computer engineer.

“I attended Ayalolo Junior High School but couldn’t continue due to financial constraints,” he recounted. “My father couldn’t support my education, so I had to quit and start working to support myself and my family.”

A Turning Point

In 2020, Joshua secured a job as a security officer at Sacred Heart Technical Institute. The supportive environment at the school, especially the encouragement from the principal, Mrs. Money, reignited his passion for education.

“I noticed that many of the teachers at the school were still furthering their education. Their dedication inspired me to pursue my BECE,” he said.

Joshua approached the principal about his decision, and she fully supported him, encouraging him to study hard. Balancing his job and studies was challenging, but with help from teachers and students, he persevered.

The Journey to Success

“My job made it difficult to attend classes, so I relied on teachers and students to help me with difficult subjects,” Joshua shared. “Sometimes, I sacrificed sleep to study. I realized that education has no age limit.”

Despite facing ridicule from some students and school staff, Joshua remained focused. “When I wrote the BECE, some students were curious and even surprised to see someone my age among them. But I ignored their reactions and stayed committed to my goal,” he said.

A Message to the Youth

Joshua, now holding his BECE certificate, is urging the younger generation to take full advantage of Ghana’s Free SHS policy.

“For those who think you can succeed without education, don’t take that risk. A time will come when you’ll need to read something, and you’ll have no choice but to depend on others,” he cautioned.

Looking Ahead

With his BECE certificate, Joshua plans to enroll in Accra Polytechnic’s evening classes to pursue his dream of becoming a computer engineer while continuing to support his family.

“I’m grateful to my principal, teachers, and students who helped me along the way. I also appeal to anyone willing to sponsor my education to help make my dream a reality,” he concluded.
