Running Mate of the All People’s Congress (APC), Rev. Dr. Samuel Worlanyo Mensah has echoed the urgent call to action made by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II regarding the pressing issue of illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey.
In an exclusive interview with www.newslinkghana.com,Rev. Dr. Worlanyo Mensah emphasized that inaction is no longer an option in addressing the environmental devastation caused by these activities.
During the Ghana Bar Association’s annual conference on September 9 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged various professional bodies, including the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) and the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), to unite against illegal mining practices that threaten the nation’s water bodies and environment.
He described galamsey as an “environmental enemy” and highlighted the severe risks it poses to water supply systems across Ghana. The Asantehene called for legal frameworks to be examined and strengthened to combat this crisis effectively.
Rev. Dr. Worlanyo Mensah praised Otumfuo’s leadership in tackling galamsey, recalling instances where the Asantehene took decisive action against sub-chiefs involved in illegal mining activities. He noted that Otumfuo’s recent appeal for collective efforts from all sectors of society is a significant step forward in addressing the galamsey menace.
“The Asantehene has set an example by dealing with those within his jurisdiction who engage in galamsey, showcasing his commitment to this cause,” Dr. Mensah stated. He reinforced that stakeholders must not remain passive but actively participate in efforts to eradicate illegal mining.
Galamsey has emerged as a critical threat to Ghana’s natural resources, leading to widespread destruction of forests and water bodies while also impacting agricultural productivity and public health. Recent reports indicate alarming declines in cocoa yields and rising respiratory diseases in mining areas, underscoring the urgent need for effective intervention.
As calls for immediate action intensify from various groups, including UTAG and GBA, the collective sentiment is clear: a unified front is essential to combat galamsey and protect Ghana’s environmental heritage for future generations.
