Organised Labour has declared an industrial action in all parts of the country effective October 10, 2024, following the government’s disregard towards their demand for decisive action against illegal mining.
This was contained in a press statement jointly issued by the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, Joshua Ansah, Chairman of the Forum, Isaac Bampoe Addo and the Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Kenneth Koomson.
This decision was taken by the organized labour during a meeting on October 1, a day after the ultimatum given to the government expired.
In the notice, the group said, “Organized labour met at an emergency meeting today, October 1, 2024. Following the expiration of our deadline, and the failure of government to meet our demands on illegal mining (galamsey) Organised Labour has decided to declare a nationwide strike with effect from October 10, 2024.”
It directed all workers to stick to their homes starting from next week Thursday until the government accedes to their demands.
Demands
Organised labour is among other things demanding the declaration of a state of emergency; the revocation of the LI 2462 that mandates the mining in forest reserves; and the removal of seized machinery from forest reserves.
They also asked for the establishment of special courts to try those engaging in illegal mining; giving the police and the military a free hand to operate; and compel political parties vying in the general election to make a commitment to the fight against galamsey.
