Gbetorhia Youth Foundation Holds Football Tourney, Launches Girls in ICT Project

The Gbetorhia Youth Foundation in collaboration with Morfiala Foundation, with funding support from Angels 4 Brazil and Africa, all non-govermental organizations (NGO’s) has held a soccer tournament at Gbegbekope, a predominantly farming community in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta region.

 

The occasion also saw the launch of a “Girls in ICT” Project and the distribution of sanitary pads to school girls in the area to ensure their menstrual health.

 

The events which brought together various teams from the enclave was to foster the spirit of unity and fellow feeling among the residents and to bring them together to raise funds to initiate self help development projects which have been lacking for several decades.

Speaking on the sidelines of the events, President of the Gbetorhia Youth Foundation, John D. K. Korsorku commended the participating teams for their great show of youthful exuberance and dedication over the years to the cause of the association.

 

He lamented the absence of basic infrastructure and amenities in the area which he observed was adversely affecting the living conditions of the people.

 

Of particular mention is the lack of potable drinking water which has been a major cause of worry to the people, calling on the authorities and benevolent organizations to come to the aid of the community in finding a solution to these daunting challenges.

 

He also mentioned the lack of a library and a computer laboratory at the Gbegbekope Basic school which was hampering smooth academic work, calling for the provision of same to improve teaching and learning outcomes.

 

Korsorku further observed that lack of employment opportunities in the enclave was a major factor driving the youth to urban centres in search of jobs, leaving the vulnerable aged back at home, further escalating the poverty situation in the area. He appealed for stringent measures to remedy the situation.

 

National President for Morfiala Foundation, Madam Rebecca Dzidzorgbe enjoined the youth to refrain from detrimental habits which had the potential of ruining their future and hold fast to only what was good and beneficial to society, calling on the residents to be one another’s keeper and to seek available opportunities to improve on their lives.

 

Acting Chairman of the Bedikorpe Development Foundation, Professor Evershed Kwasi Amuzu who chaired the occasion, stressed the need for the younger generation to embrace education as that was the surest way to ensure that they become useful adults who will contribute meaningfully to nation building in the future.

Executive Founder and Coordinator for Morfiala Foundation, Oscar  Novixoxo Akaba pledged the foundation’s readiness to support the youth of the area in every way possible towards the realization of their set objectives.

 

He revealed that Morfiala Foundation was seeking for assistance from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Angels 4 Brazil and Africa for funding support to help the community build the computer laboratory at the Basic School for the “Girls in ICT” project the near future.

 

The events swirled around the theme: “Bridging the ICT Gap: Girls in Perspective.”
