The Ghana Education Service (GES) has introduced a self-placement system for 12,720 newly qualified teachers who recently completed their degree programs at colleges of education and successfully passed their licensure exams.
Following an invitation for employment issued by the GES on May 11, 2024, the service received over 20,000 applications from qualified teachers. From this pool, 12,720 candidates were selected in the first batch.
As announced during a press conference at the GES headquarters in Accra on Thursday, July 4, these teachers are required to visit the GES portal between July 5 and July 31, 2024, to complete the self-placement exercise.
Eric Nkansah, Director-General of GES, outlined that the self-placement system aims to address several challenges teachers face, including language barriers and financial constraints.
“The self-posting recruitment model ensures that newly trained teachers are posted to regions where language will not be a barrier. This enables them to communicate effectively in the local language of their chosen region, thereby fostering an optimal teaching and learning environment,” Nkansah stated.
He further explained the process: “Teachers need to visit the GES promotion platform, the same platform used for their initial application. They will follow the outlined steps to select a school of their preference, considering proximity to their families and other personal considerations.”
Introducing this self-placement system marks a significant step towards enhancing teacher deployment efficiency and ensuring equitable distribution across various regions in Ghana. It also empowers teachers to choose assignments that align with their personal and professional aspirations.
This initiative is part of GES’s broader efforts to improve educational outcomes and support the teaching workforce in Ghana.
