The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a change in the reopening date for single-track Senior High Schools (SHSs), moving it from March 29, 2025, to April 23, 2025. This adjustment is due to the upcoming public holidays and academic considerations.
According to an official circular dated March 27, 2025, the GES directed school heads to inform parents, guardians, and students about the revised reopening date.
The circular emphasized the importance of stakeholders taking note and preparing accordingly.
The initial reopening date was set for March 29, 2025, after students vacated on March 4, 2025. However, the impending Eid-Ul-Fitr holiday on March 30 and 31 prompted an initial shift to April 1. Following further assessment, the GES extended the date to April 23 to ensure a seamless academic schedule.
Cassandra Twum-Ampofo, Head of the GES Public Relations Unit, explained that reopening just before multiple holidays would cause unnecessary disruptions and pose travel risks for students. “Monday and Tuesday had been declared statutory holidays, and right after that, there would be Easter celebrations. It would not be prudent to have students traveling back and forth,” she stated.
Twum-Ampofo assured that the delay would not negatively impact final-year students preparing for the 2025 WASSCE, as additional instructional hours would be introduced to compensate for lost time. The adjustment applies exclusively to single-track SHSs, while double-track students will follow their existing academic calendar as scheduled.
