Ghana: Afua Asantewaa Aduonum shatters Guinness World Record for longest singing marathon

Aduonum’s record-breaking achievement not only brings pride to Ghana but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring musicians and performers globally. Her determination and passion for her craft underline the power of music to transcend boundaries and create a lasting impact on communities.

In an awe-inspiring display of musical endurance, Ghanaian broadcast journalist Afua Asantewaa Aduonum has etched her name into the annals of history, surpassing the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon by an individual.

Aduonum’s remarkable feat culminated on Friday (29 December) after an astonishing 126 hours and 52 minutes of non-stop singing at the Akwaaba Village in the nation’s capital, Accra.

The mother of three embarked on this extraordinary musical journey in the early hours of Sunday, December 24, treating audiences to a captivating repertoire of hundreds of Ghanaian songs. Aduonum’s marathon performance showcased not only her vocal prowess but also a deep appreciation for the rich musical tapestry of Ghana.

Her tireless dedication and passion for music captivated audiences at the Akwaaba Village, creating an atmosphere of celebration and unity. From traditional melodies to contemporary hits, Aduonum’s marathon journey transcended genres, making it a unique and culturally resonant experience for all who were fortunate enough to witness it.

“This was a mere dream that was visualised in just a period of five days,” a visibly worn out but elated Aduonum told the crowd after the attempt. “It has been a smooth journey. I hope it will be an inspiration to women out there.”

“There is a lot out there and if you put your mind to it you’ll achieve it,” the mother of three added.

The attempt now awaits an official review by the Guinness World Records team to validate Aduonum’s claim to the title. If successful, she will dethrone the current record-holder, Indian singer Sunil Waghmare, who held the record for an impressive 105 hours, achieved from March 3 to March 7, 2012.

Aduonum’s record-breaking achievement not only brings pride to Ghana but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring musicians and performers globally. Her determination and passion for her craft underline the power of music to transcend boundaries and create a lasting impact on communities.

“Your passion and talent shine brightly, and I’m confident you’ll definitely make history. Keep singing your heart out! We are with you,” Ghana’s Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia told Aduonum.

The attempt attracted high profile celebrities such as Bhim Nation president Stonebwoy, KiDi, Kwame Eugene, Kwabena Kwabena, Sarkodie and controversial dancehall artist Shatta Wale among others.

Gospel trio, Daughters of Glorious Jesus and Rufftown Records signee, Wendy Shay also graced the occasion.

Actor Clemento Suarez, MP Sam George, media personalities Bola Ray, Naa Ashorkor, Berla Mundi and a host of many others passed through to encourage her.

As the world eagerly awaits the official confirmation from Guinness World Records, Aduonum’s name is already etched in the hearts of those who witnessed this historic musical marathon. Ghana celebrates a new champion, and the global music community applauds a woman whose melodies have touched the soul and broken barriers.
