Ghana joins world to mark Migrants Day

Today is World Migrants Day. It is a day dedicated to create awareness about migration, its prospects, dangers and the need to respect the rights of migrants.

The observance of the Day this year focuses on the stories of social cohesion, which are as varied and unique as each of the 272 million migrants living new lives and building new communities in every corner of the world.

As part of activities marking the day, the Western Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service has lined up a number of activities to commemorate the day and also educate the public on it activities.

According to the Western Regional Public Affairs Director of the GIS, Moses Akakpo, the Public has numerous misconceptions about the activities of the service and the event is, therefore, to open its doors to the public who need clarification on migration and related issues.

The Western Regional Public Affairs Director of the GIS, Moses Akakpo said the theme, we work together, create together, sing, dance and play together highlights the meaning of International Migrants Day and its message.

He said the adoption of the 18th December 1990, UN Resolution on the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families was basically to protect and ensure the rights of migrants in member states.

Mr. Akakpo emphasised that migrants all over the world have rights and responsibilities.
