Ghana and South Africa on last Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defense and training cooperation.
This agreement aims to enhance collaboration between the militaries of the two countries, allowing them to share knowledge, resources, and best practices in various areas of military operations and training.
The agreement was signed at the end of a two-day close door Joint Defense Committee Meeting which was aimed at reaffirming the friendship and bilateral ties for the implementation and operationalization of an earlier Defense Cooperation Agreement signed in February 2023.
Ghana and South Africa have a long-standing relationship, and this agreement is seen as a way to further strengthen their partnership in the field of defense.
Brigadier-General Winfried Dzandu-Hedidor, the Director-General in Charge of Training at the General Headquarters, Ghana Armed Forces, said it would enhance collaboration between the Militaries of both countries.
He said a key area identified for cooperation at the meeting was training amongst personnel of both Armed Forces.
“This aspect is the defense portion that seeks to foster collaboration between the South African Defense Forces and the Ghana Armed Forces,” he added.
Under the terms of the MoU, Ghana and South Africa will collaborate in areas such as joint military exercises, exchange programs for military personnel, and the sharing of intelligence and operational expertise. The agreement also provides a framework for the two countries to work together on regional security issues and to support each other in peacekeeping missions.
The signing of the MoU will enhance the defense capabilities of both countries and also promote regional stability. The collaboration between the two countries’ militaries is expected to lead to greater cooperation and coordination in the region, benefiting both countries and the broader community.
Ghana and South Africa have strengthened the relationship between the two countries in many areas.
Currently, the two countries have signed a visa free waiver agreement which allows their citizens to visit others for a period of 90 days.
