Ghanaian Education Ministry Promises Free Tablets for All SHS by October

The initiative aims to equip students under the free SHS policy with essential technological skills, aligning with the government’s commitment to enhance education through technology.

The Ghanaian Ministry of Education has confirmed that all Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the country will receive free student tablets by October 2024, fulfilling President Akufo-Addo’s earlier pledge.

President Akufo-Addo announced plans to distribute Smart Tablets to approximately 1.3 million SHS students nationwide on March 24, 2024, during the launch of the Ghana Smart Schools Project in Accra.

The initiative aims to equip students under the free SHS policy with essential technological skills, aligning with the government’s commitment to enhance education through technology.

As of May 2024, the Ministry reported that 70,000 smart tablets had already been distributed to 30 schools out of the 450,000 schools expected to receive them, leaving others awaiting their allocation.

Addressing the International Educators Summit 2024, which was themed “Reimagining Education for the Future We Seek: Africa and the World in Dialogue,” Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum assured that the distribution process was in motion.

“We have begun momentum in education technology integration. All high schools will get their tablets within the next two or three months, everyone—the 1.3 million. We have started already,” Dr Adutwum affirmed.
