Ghana’s population is set to exceed 50 million by 2050, marking a significant rise from 30.8 million recorded in 2021, according to projections by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
The findings were detailed in the 2021 Population and Housing Census Thematic Report on Population Projections, which indicated that Ghana’s population is expected to grow 1.7 times larger than the 2021 figure by mid-century.
The report highlighted that the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions are anticipated to remain the most populous, each with approximately 7.5 million inhabitants by 2050. Conversely, the Northern, Northeast, and Savannah regions are expected to experience the highest growth rates, with populations projected to double during the same period.
Significant demographic shifts were also noted, including a decrease in the youth population and an increase in the elderly demographic.
Urbanization trends are expected to continue, with over half of Ghana’s regions forecasted to be urbanized by 2030. The report estimates that the population in urban areas will rise from 56.7% in 2021 to 60.7% by 2030, reflecting a significant urban growth trend.
“By the end of the decade (2030), the population is expected to reach 37.2 million, with an average annual increase of approximately 711,706 persons,” the report stated.
While urbanization is rising, seven regions—Volta, Oti, Western North, North East, Upper West, Savannah, and Upper East—will remain predominantly rural by 2030.
The projections underscore Ghana’s demographic challenges and opportunities, highlighting the need for strategic planning and resource allocation to accommodate future population growth and urbanization.
