The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has expressed grave concern over the unresolved murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale and the assault on journalist Latif Iddrisu. Speaking at a news conference held at the Ghana International Press Centre on January 22, 2025, Mr. Dwumfour criticized the lack of progress in police investigations into these cases and announced decisive actions to seek justice.
Ahmed Suale was murdered six years ago, yet no arrests have been made. The situation worsened when former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame revealed in 2024 that the police had failed to submit a prosecutable docket. Recently, MP Kwame Asare-Obeng (A-Plus) disclosed he provided information to the police about a suspect but threatened to publish the suspect’s name if the police did not act promptly.
The GJA has given the Ghana Police Service until the end of March 2025 to provide tangible updates on the case. The association plans to organize press conferences, brief international partners, and escalate the matter to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice if no progress is made.
The GJA also intends to take Latif Iddrisu’s case to the ECOWAS court. Mr. Iddrisu, a journalist formerly with Multimedia, suffered severe injuries after being assaulted by police officers in 2018. Despite the police claiming insufficient evidence and faulty CCTV footage, the GJA insists on pursuing justice for him.
