The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called for an urgent multi-stakeholder meeting to address the growing indiscipline in Senior High Schools.
General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Tanko Musah, says the loss of character, conscience and value system in schools raises a major worry that needs immediate resolution.
“We need to organise a stakeholder meeting, and this must be done now; time is not on our side. It is dangerous to train somebody, impart him with knowledge, with skills and the person does not have any value,” he told TV3 on Thursday, September 5.
As an organisation, GNAT is disturbed by the level of confidence of some students, which it says can be likened to the extent of galamsey practice in the country now.
It wants the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, the Parent-Teacher Association and other bodies to hold an urgent discussion to find a lasting solution to the growing problem.
“Today, when the students are coming to school, they come with their parents’ mobile phones; some even come with weapons – that is where we’ve gotten to,” Mr. Tanko Musah observed.
Death of O’Reilly Student
His remarks come in a reaction to the death of a final-year student of the O’Reilly Senior High School.
Edward Borketey Sackey was allegedly stabbed to death by a colleague student, Godwin, after a heated altercation reportedly about whose father is wealthier.
The incident occurred at the school’s premises on Monday, September 2 shortly after the 18-year-old had finished an exam.
According to a cousin of the deceased who witnessed the situation, the stabbing happened during a fight with a colleague named Godwin.
The deceased was stabbed three times in the chest and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Suspect remanded
The La District Court has remanded the suspect to two weeks in police custody.
Godwin, 18, has been charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed to death a colleague on Monday, September 2.
He was arrested on Tuesday, September 3 and appeared in court on Thursday, September 5.
He will reappear in court on September 19, 2024.
