Ghana is bleeding truth in the digital space. Fake news is no longer harmless gossip or political banter—it’s a full-blown national threat. Every day, social media platforms are flooded with disinformation campaigns, fabricated news headlines, deepfake videos, and coordinated propaganda operations that poison public discourse, manipulate elections, destroy reputations, and even incite violence. Yet, Ghana watches passively, with no comprehensive legal framework to address it.
Why hasn’t Parliament acted? Why hasn’t the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation Ghana introduced a bill to tackle fake news, misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation online? Why has the Cyber Security Authority Ghana remained silent all these while? Where is the Data Protection Commission Ghana saying about how people’s personal information are shared without recourse to any legal basis? Are we waiting for our own digital Rwandan moment—for the lies to burn down trust, institutions, and unity—before we wake up?
The current regulatory vacuum allows online fraudsters, political operatives, and foreign influencers to wage war on facts without consequence. It’s not just about politics anymore—public health, national security, business confidence, and citizen safety are on the line.
Ghana must act now. We need a robust and rights-respecting Digital Truth and Accountability Act that defines fake news offenses, empowers fact-checking, protects journalists, penalizes deliberate spreaders of lies, and holds platforms accountable.
Freedom of expression is sacred—but it does not include the freedom to destroy our democracy with calculated lies.
Mr. President – John Dramani Mahama, Honourable Minister— Hon. Samuel Nartey George how many more elections, public panics, or lynchings must we endure before we legislate truth?
Ghana deserves better. The world is watching. So are the next generation of Ghanaians.
Will you lead? Or will you let lies lead us?
