The Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has reaffirmed that if elected president, he will reduce the number of ministers to 50.
Speaking during the 8th Ghana CEO Summit on Monday, May 27, 2024, under the theme “Reigniting Business and Economic Growth: Charting A Path Forward; Economic Diversification and Artificial Intelligence Transformation. A Private-Public Sector CEO Dialogue and High Impact Learning,” Dr. Bawumia said reducing drastically the size of government is a priority.
He maintains that doing things differently will help reduce pressure on government expenditure.
“As I have said and made it clear. On February 7, I said that for example, I believe that I can run a government with fifty ministers rather than what we are doing today and I have made that very clear already,” he stressed.
There has been a series of calls from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) as well as many other Ghanaians for government to reduce the number of ministers due to the current economic crisis.
As a result of this, President Akufo-Addo in his second term reduced the number of ministers from 126 to 80.
But the Vice President, who is seeking to succeed President Akufo-Addo as the President of Ghana is confident that he will be able to run the country with only 50 ministers.
