Head coach Accra Lions’, Ibrahim Tanko has been charged by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Disciplinary Committee for a breach of Section 34(6)(d) of the GFA Premier League Regulations, 2019.
The charge, according to the Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association, is as a result from alleged misconduct through his commentary on match officials during their Ghana Premier League round five (5) game against Asante Kotoko.
The said game, played at the Obuasi Len Clay Sports Stadium, ended 1:0 in favor of the Porcupine Warriors with Albert Amoah, scoring the only goal in game on the 49th minute, just minutes into the second half.\
After the game, the former Ghana international in his post-match interview with the media, did not directly name the referees but implied that the officiating was unfair, contributing to Kotoko’s success.
“We had a not-so-good first half, and it was 1-0 in the second half. Then we woke up. Definitely, in the second half, we played better. But, yeah, all of us saw what the three gentlemen did. This is how the game ended.” He said
Coach Ibrahim Tanko added, “Being 1-0 down doesn’t mean you have to just throw everything away. We believe in our system. So, definitely, like I said, the three gentlemen helped them. Congratulations to Kotoko.”
These comments, according to the Discipline Committee of the Ghana Football Association, brings the name of the game to disrepute hence the charges.
The GFA aims to maintain the integrity of the sport and will take appropriate action in accordance with the regulations. The charge is in accordance with Section 34(6)(d) of the GFA Premier League Regulations, 2019, which states that, “(34)Offences by GFA officials, clubs, club officials and players etc”
(6)”In addition to matters referred to in any other regulation, it shall be misconduct if a club, Director, official, Referee, Assistant Referee, or Player or member is proved to have done or permitted or assisted any of the following to be done:
“(d) Commit any offensive act not provided for above or make any offensive statement either verbally or in writing or is responsible for any conduct or any matter which is in the opinion of the Association, ungentlemanly, insulting or improper behaviour or likely to bring the game into disrepute.”
The GFA is committed to maintaining the integrity of the sport and ensuring that all participants adhere to the regulations. This charge against Ibrahim Tanko is a reminder to all stakeholders in Ghanaian football that they have a responsibility to conduct themselves in a manner that upholds the values of the game. The GFA will take appropriate action in accordance with the regulations to address this breach of conduct.
A decision on the matter will be communicated in due course, as coach Ibrahim Tanko has up to Thursday, October 10, 2024, to respond to the charges.
