The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has announced plans to hold two presidential debates for selected flagbearers later this year, with events scheduled for October and November in Kumasi and Accra. These debates will be preceded by “Presidential Evening Encounters” in September.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, 7 August, the IEA outlined the details of its “Pre-Election Debate Series,” which will also feature a vice-presidential debate in Accra for selected candidates. The specific dates, times, and venues for these events will be confirmed following consultations with the candidates and their political parties.
Justice Sophia Akuffo (rtd), a distinguished fellow at the IEA, said the debates will provide presidential candidates with a platform to present their policies and vision for governing the country.
“It will help citizens make informed decisions at the election, promote an issue-based campaign devoid of personal attacks and rancour, and promote peace before, during and after the elections,” she noted.
“While answering questions pooled from the entire country, the presidential candidates will have the opportunity to point out the weakness in the policies and programmes of their opponents.”
“The vice-presidential debates are important because, as our Constitution mandates, the Vice-President assumes the role of the President when the latter cannot perform the functions of that office. Vice-presidential aspirants, therefore, have to demonstrate adequate Presidential qualities, skills and competence,” she added.
The IEA stated that the presidential debates would involve candidates responding to questions submitted anonymously by Ghanaians, while the Evening Encounters would follow a “Town Hall” format, allowing candidates to respond directly to questions posed by representatives of key stakeholder groups.
A Presidential Debates Committee is being formed to establish the ground rules for the debates and encounters, as well as to gather questions from the public.
The IEA reiterated its commitment to neutrality, assuring the public that it would continue to offer an impartial platform for the healthy contest of ideas. Eligible candidates are encouraged to participate in the debates and evening encounters.
