A research team member with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah (popularly known as Nana Kay) has described critics who have slammed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for investigating the Auditor-General Mr. Daniel Domelevo as nation wreckers.
He opined that persons who have sought to discredit EOCO over its decision to investigate the Auditor-General as unreasonable.
He told the host of Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that EOCO is only acting following a petition it received over procurement breaches filed against the Audit Service under the leadership of Mr. Domelevo.
He quizzed why Mr. Domelevo would come out and attack EOCO and claim they had no powers to investigate the matter.
EOCO has denied claims that it does not have the power to investigate the Auditor General as is being speculated.
The state body is investigating the Audit service after it received a petition from a political pressure group, Alliance for Accountable Governance on allegations of procurement breaches.
However, the Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo, wrote to EOCO indicating that the investigative body has no legal mandate to probe him.
But the Head of Public Affairs, Jacqueline Avotri, in a statement rejected the assertions by Mr. Domelevo saying: “Per section 3 of Act 804, the functions of the Office are to (a) investigate and on the authority of the Attorney-General prosecute serious offences…”
“It should be noted that Section 79 of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, Act 959, is limited to corruption-related offences under the category of the serious offence of the EOCO Act. It does not oust the jurisdiction of EOCO from investigating other serious offences that are not necessarily of a corruption-related nature,” EOCO added.
Nana Kay responding to the statement from EOCO said the statement was appropriate and has helped resolve the confusion surrounding the matter.
He was of the view that Mr. Domelevo ”is scared of losing his job for the breaches levelled against him just like what happened former Electoral Commission boss Mrs. Charlotte Osei over procurement breaches. Why is she scared of being investigated by EOCO. Why is he choosing a body to investigate him? If he has nothing to hide, he should allow EOCO to investigate him.”
He slammed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for defending the Auditor-General.
To him, it makes no logical sense for them to defend him.
