Ignite Media Group condemns armed attack on Metro TV premises
Ignite Media Group (IMG), operators of Metro TV, Original TV, and Original 91.1 FM, has strongly condemned an armed invasion of their premises by an auctioneer, a court bailiff, and armed police officers on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
The incident occurred around 9:30 am at IMG’s North Ridge offices in Accra during a live broadcast of the Good Morning Ghana programme.
According to a statement from IMG, the auctioneer, George Addo, identified as the Director of Geld Mart, entered the studio with the bailiff and armed officers, declaring his intent to disrupt the programme. The group forcibly broke into the studio, causing the live broadcast to be abruptly terminated.
IMG noted that this was not the first attempt by George Addo to execute a controversial court judgment. Last year, he allegedly led a team of masked police officers in an attempt to seize Dr Randy Abbey’s vehicle as he arrived to host Good Morning Ghana. That attempt was aborted after Dr. Abbey resisted.
The latest attack caused fear and panic among Metro TV staff and security personnel. IMG reported that excessive force was used during the incident, leaving a private security officer with a head injury.
The situation caught the attention of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who personally intervened. The IGP dispatched a team of officers to restore calm, directing the auctioneer, bailiff, and armed policemen to vacate IMG’s premises.
Dr. Dampare assured IMG of a thorough investigation into the matter and promised enhanced security measures at their offices.
IMG emphasized the need for lawful and respectful conduct in executing court orders, condemning the intimidation and disruption caused by the attack.
