The Road Transport Operators has directed passengers to boycott the transport fares increment announced by some transport operators calling themselves Transport Operators Association in the country.
In a joint statement, the General Secretary of the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU), Godfred Abulbire and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, said there has not been an engagement with stakeholders for price increment.
Therefore it added that no decision to increase transport fares has been taken.
This means that the existing prices remain.
“Transport fares remain the same until such a decision is reached by stakeholders and communicated to the general public as it has been the practice.”
“We wish to inform the general public that there has not been any decision taken to increase transport fares as being speculated.”
Conceding that the recent increment has created a marginal gap, it is determined to continue engagement with stakeholders to consider the various inputs into their operations.
It added, “We kindly request all Commercial Transport Operators to comply with the existing fares. We take this opportunity to assure all Transport Operators and the General Public that we will continue to work in their interest.”
Background
The group calling themselves Transport Operators Association Of Ghana served notice for 15% upward adjustments in transport fares across the country, attributing it to recent upward adjustments in fuel prices at the pumps.
In its justification, it said, “This has become necessary due to the recent surge in petroleum and spare parts prices coupled with economic hardship.”
The new prices were scheduled to take effect from Monday, July 22, 2024.
