The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, led heads of Ghana’s security agencies on a courtesy call to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) corporate headquarters in Accra. The meeting aimed to strengthen security measures for the upcoming December 7 general elections, ensuring a peaceful and secure environment before, during, and after the polls.
In a display of commitment, all security agency heads attended the meeting in their official uniforms, symbolizing solidarity and readiness to guarantee the safety of citizens and the electoral process.
Assurance of Professional Security
Speaking on behalf of the National Election Task Force, Dr. Dampare expressed gratitude for the warm reception extended by the EC. He commended the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, and her team for their exceptional preparations thus far.
“We are committed to delivering the professional security Ghana deserves as a beacon of hope for Africa. Our collaboration with you has assured us of your readiness to carry out your constitutional mandate of organizing a free, fair, and transparent election,” Dr. Dampare noted.
He further highlighted the progress made in election preparations:
- Ballot boxes: 95% of printing and distribution completed.
- Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs): 50% distribution done, with full completion expected before election day.
“We are confident that the technical collaboration between our teams will ensure a smooth and peaceful election day,” he added.
Commitment to Peace and Transparency
In response, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa expressed her appreciation for the effective partnership between the EC and Ghana’s security agencies.
“Your contributions have been instrumental in ensuring the peace we currently enjoy. Transparency remains our core mandate before, during, and after the elections,” she affirmed.
She also reminded citizens of the upcoming special voting exercise on December 2, 2024, urging those eligible to check their designated polling stations and vote peacefully.
“Let us all work together to maintain the peace and ensure that every Ghanaian exercises their constitutional right without fear or intimidation,” she concluded.
The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts between the Electoral Commission and security agencies in fostering a secure and credible electoral process for Ghana.
