In Ghana today all Slay Queens/Kings on Social Media are Actors – Justice Abadah

A young passionate Ghanaian movie maker, Justice Ornan Abadah, has shared his disappointment in the lack of growth of the movie industry in Ghana to re-echo some views recently expressed by Shirley Frimpong Manso that “Upcoming Actors are lazy”. Abadah supports the point that most industry people today are more into the fame than the passion. This to him is a false start and must be checked.

“Everyone is called an actor these days. Someone could just be popular on social media small, all of a sudden the person becomes an actor. Gone were the days when people actually work on their talents. Because of social media followers they think they can do whatever they want and still be given roles,” he lamented.

According to Abadah, this is a very big problem in the industry, and it is what is making it difficult to discover “true talents”. He was also not enthused by the popular rumor in the industry that producers and directors demand sex and money before giving out roles. Much as he believes that some of the stories surrounding the issue have just been cooked to tarnish the image of certain people, there could also be an element of truth in some of the allegations.

In an exclusive interview with ghananewsonline.com.gh, the Golden Short Film award winner said he has personally heard several of such stories and does not understand why such things should actually happen. He thinks upcoming actors are too desperate to become stars and that is what is accounting for some of those demands. He said to be desperate for something is not an entirely bad thing, because, “sometimes desperation keeps you positively persistent”, however, upcoming ones must take precautions, believe in their talents and have more passion.

“If a director sees that you are very desperate, he will try to take advantage of that. I believe in talent, I believe in passion, I don’t think you have to pay or trade sex for role, rather I believe you should be paid for roles…and so, if you allow yourself to be taken advantage of, it’s your own problem,” he cautioned young actors.

Asked why Actor Anthony Woode is always seen in his films, he laughed it off and said… “Whenever I pick a script I just see him, the guy is too good and he is my brother, I don’t see any of my future projects without him”
