Born Michael Owusu and known professionally as Sarkodie began his music career as an underground rapper, participating in Adom FM’s popular rap competition Kasahare Level.
Sarkodie was not a household name like today even when he was making waves of his new rape style on Kasahare Level because, the station was broadcasting only in the Accra Region out of the 10 regions of Ghana at the time.

However, the Obidi or Obid Pon Bidi has he is also affectionately called met his former manager Duncan Williams of Duncwills Entertainment while participating in the aforementioned competition. He also met musicians Edem and Castro, who introduced him to Hammer of The Last Two, an established record producer. Impressed by his rap flows, Hammer allowed Sarkodie to record two tracks for his album Volta Regime
His professional career in the music industry started in 2015 and since then, has taken the lead of Ghana rappers in the Ghana Music Industry.
After the radio rap competition, he begun to do freestyle mix tapes and he gradually gained a small fans that instantly accepted and loved his rap style he introduced in the Ghana Rap scene.
2. Predecessors
There were great rappers in the Ghana Music Industry long before Sarkodie came into the industry. Sarkodie himself has confessed in his interviews many times that, when he started rap, he looked up to some of the greatest rappers he knew were leading the rap race in the country.
According to Sarkodie, his role models were Obrafuor who was also under The Last Two record label, Okomfo Kwadee, Lord Kenya,Reggie Rockstone, Okyeame Kwame and many other great rappers who took the mantle of rap and decorated for the music fans of Ghana. So, if Sarkodie has confessed that he has role models, then why is it that people find it so comfortable and bold to give him the accolade of All Time Ghana Greatest Rapper?
3 Achievements
Sarkodie was the first Ghanaian and African born living in Africa for that matter and the first to win BET’s Best International Flow artist at the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards. He is also considered one of the major proponents of the Azonto genre and dance
With this, he has won many memorable achievement awards like the Vodafone Ghana Music Award for “Artiste of the Decade”
