Former military officer of the Ghanaian Armed Forces, Prince Kofi Amoabeng has stated that it would be very difficult for someone to organize a coup in Ghana now.
According to him, unlike the previous days where the military ruled and didn’t talk politics, the current situation is different.
He said the recent military is being influenced by political parties and that for the military to come together for one purpose can not be possible.
Speaking in an interview with Kofi TV monitored by Elvisanokyenews.net, Captain Prince Kofi Amoabeng (rtd) indicated that during his time in Military soldiers had nothing to do with the government so they could take any decision of themselves.
“The only trouble now is that when I was in the Army, Soldiers didn’t tak politics. It was like a rule now the Soldiers are being influenced by politics more than anything. So now if a soldier is not NPP then he is NDC and that is why according to him it is difficult to organise a coup now but at first the soldier has nothing to do with the government so if soldiers are talking, they are talking” The co-founder of the defauct UT bank said.
He added that the political interference in the Army is now demeaning the Military.
According to retired Army Officers, they should be appointed as Defence Ministers but currently anybody can become Defence Minister due to politics.
He explained that a retired Military Officer understands the system and knows the challenges the Military is facing.
“The current Minister of Defence, I don’t know him and I am not sure he has attended boy scouts before because there was no boy scout in his time and become the Minister of Defence and Ghana has International celebrated Generals. Every country that I know, the Minister of Defence is a retired Army Officer or Military Officer because you understand the system, you understand the troubles of the soldier, what they need and they put this young man there, what do you think the Generals are thinking? You are demeaning the Military” Prince Kofi Amoabeng stated.
He reiterated the need to appoint someone in a position who has experience and understands the system.
His comment comes after the High court in Accra sentenced six Ghanaians, including three soldiers to death by hanging for their involvement in a coup plot three years ago.
The six persons, including three soldiers, are; Donya Kafui, aka Ezor (a blacksmith) and Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu (a fleet manager), were found guilty of conspiracy to commit treason and treason, while Johannes Zikpi (a civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces) was found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason.
The three soldiers – Warrant Officer II Esther Saan Dekuwine, Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, and Corporal Sylvester Akanpewon – were found guilty of conspiracy to commit high treason.
Recently some African countries including Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali have experienced coups.
Many Ghanaians have questioned possible coup in the country due to what they described as bad governance.
