It’s safe to stay away from gifts – Supreme Court nominee to Judges

Court of Appeal Judge, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo says it is safe for members of the judiciary to refrain from accepting gifts altogether on the basis of their judicial function.

In her view, the more definitive step to dealing with corruption as a nation is for institutions to formulate codes of ethic that will guide employees asking the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice(CHRAJ) to lead the charge.

“…That is the situation with the judiciary for instance, so I think every institution should do that assessment. Perhaps CHRAJ should help every institution to do that assessment and formulate that because of the structure of their work. I think that you cannot put judges in the same context as politicians, they are different people and have different functions and so if we deliberately think about every context and formulate codes for every context, we will be doing ourselves a lot of good.”

The Supreme Court nominee made the suggestion on Tuesday at her vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

Meanwhile, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has advocated for a more robust national conversation on corruption.
