Kassena-Nankana West: MP appeals to striking teachers to resume classes

Chiana-Paga MP Nikyema Billa Alamzy has urged striking teachers in Kassena-Nankana West to return to classrooms as he engages the Education Minister to address their concerns.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Chiana-Paga, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, has appealed to striking teachers in the Kassena-Nankana West District to return to their classrooms as efforts are being made to address their concerns.

The teachers have been on strike, demanding the removal of the district director of education, George Woyongo, whom they accuse of misconduct, abuse of office, and incompetence. Their protest, which took place on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, led to a petition submitted to the MP, the regional director of education, and other higher authorities seeking the director’s immediate removal.

In response, Alamzy has assured the teachers that he is actively working on their concerns. He confirmed that he has engaged the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, and submitted a copy of their petition to the Ministry of Education for review.

Having carefully reviewed the petition, I have submitted a copy to the Ministry of Education and engaged the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, on the matter. The minister has assured me that the concerns raised by the teachers will be given due attention, and efforts will be made to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”

While acknowledging the validity of the teachers’ grievances, Alamzy urged them to resume teaching to prevent further disruption to academic activities, especially with the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) only three months away in June.

While I fully acknowledge and appreciate the concerns of our hardworking teachers, I earnestly appeal to them to return to the classrooms as we work towards a resolution. With the BECE just three months away, it is crucial that we prioritize the education of our students, especially those preparing for this important examination.

Alamzy further assured the teachers that he would engage with the leadership of the teacher unions at the earliest opportunity to facilitate dialogue and find a peaceful resolution.

“Though I am currently away from the constituency due to parliamentary duties, I will engage the leadership of the teacher unions at the earliest opportunity to facilitate dialogue and a peaceful resolution. In the meantime, I urge the unions to reconsider their stance and call off the strike in the best interest of our students and the district at large.”

With a district population of approximately 81,925, the ongoing strike has raised concerns about its impact on students’ academic performance. Many students in the district rely on the public education system, and the disruption could affect their learning outcomes and future prospects.

Alamzy’s intervention is seen as a positive step toward resolving the crisis, with hopes that his engagement with the Ministry of Education will lead to a swift resolution.
